Berryl Broussard

Chief Legal Officer/General Counsel

Berryl Thompson-Broussard joined Teche Action Clinic as its General Counsel/Chief Legal Officer in 2017. She serves as one of the senior business leaders of the organization and is involved with setting strategy and implementing strategic goals from a legal perspective and advises senior management and the Board on various legal and regulatory implications of anticipated business decisions. She also provides guidance and oversight for Teche’s compliance programs and corporate governance.

Prior to joining Teche, Berryl worked as an attorney at the Gachassin Law firm from 2012 – 2017, where her practice focused on providing legal counsel to healthcare providers on regulatory, transactional, and operational matters. She advised providers on current healthcare laws and regulations, including the Stark Law, the Anti-kickback Statute, Medicare and Medicaid conditions of participation and reimbursement regulations, Health Resources & Services Administration Program requirements, accreditation standards; as well as Federal and State health information privacy, security and confidentiality requirements. Berryl also assisted healthcare providers in developing, implementing, and managing effective compliance and ethics programs in accordance with the U.S. Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

Prior to joining the Gachassin Law Firm, she also practiced insurance defense, including oil and gas litigation and served as regulatory compliance counsel in matters before the Louisiana Public Service Commission. Berryl also served as served as Senior Judicial Law Clerk in the State of Louisiana, Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal for three years.

Berryl is an active member of various professional organizations, including the Louisiana State Bar Association, the National Association of Community Health Centers, the Louisiana Primacy Care Association, the Health Care Compliance Association, the American Health Lawyers Association, as well as the recently formed Louisiana Healthcare Compliance Alliance, where she serves as the inaugural Vice-President and a member of the Founding Board of Directors.

In 2015, Berryl was selected as a “Rising Star” in healthcare by Louisiana Super Lawyers magazine and named as a “Top Lawyer” in healthcare law in Acadiana by the Acadiana Profile magazine in 2015 and 2016. She is admitted to practice law in Louisiana and also maintains a Certification in Healthcare Compliance (CHC).

Berryl received her LL.M. in Health Law, with highest honors, from Loyola University Chicago, School of Law; her J.D. cum laude from Southern University Law Center; and her undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University.
